Everton are struggling just like Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool did a few years ago, suggests Sam Allardyce.
The Toffees enjoyed a successful 2016-17 campaign in the Premier League, but having sold star striker Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United in the summer of 2017, they have struggled this season.
The Merseyside outfit are now looking to finish in the top half of the league table, but they were in danger of getting relegated to the Championship just a few weeks ago.
Allardyce has compared Everton’s current situation to that Liverpool and Tottenham just a few years ago.
Liverpool enjoyed a successful 2013-14 season in the Premier League, but struggled the following campaign after selling striker Suarez to Barcelona in the summer of 2014.
Tottenham also failed to achieve immediate success following the departure of winger Bale to Madrid in the summer of 2013.
Allardyce told The Daily Mail: “I can look at a similar situation at Liverpool when they sold Suarez and when Tottenham sold Bale.
“Lots of players came in who didn’t hit the ground running and they got criticised for it. We seem to be like that, lots of players and it just hasn’t worked.”
Summer revamp
Everton have some good players, but the Toffees do need to make some changes to the squad in the summer transfer window.
The Merseyside outfit should look at signing a central defender and a left-back, and perhaps even try to get in a couple of quality midfielders.
