Newcastle United are currently sitting in the Premier League’s bottom three as owner Mike Ashley looks for a buyer.
Sam Allardyce has claimed that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley would find a buyer if the club was ‘stable around 11th or 12th’ in the Premier League table.
The Guardian claimed that Ashley was looking at bids in excess of £300 million for the club as the retail businessman looks set to end his infamous tenure as owner.
But former boss Allardyce explained what potential buyers are thinking when trying to purchase the club as it has been 15 months since they were officially put on the market.
“I think he genuinely wants to sell Newcastle,” Allardyce told the Alan Brazil show on talkSPORT on 15/01/2019 at 8:40 am. “What surprises me, if it’s £300 million [the asking price], I don’t think that’s excessive. I really don’t.
“If the club was stable around 11th or 12th in the Premier League then I think you would get that buyer. The purchaser at this moment is saying, am I buying a Premier League club or am I buying a Championship club?”
At this moment in time, Newcastle are sitting in the bottom of three of the Premier League table following their 2-1 defeat at Chelsea at the weekend.
Despite Allardyce’s claims about being ‘stable’, the Magpies did finish in the Premier League’s top 10 under Rafa Benitez last season despite the Spaniard working with a low budget.
Following that defeat at Stamford Bridge, Benitez’s side will be on the road again, this time they will be travelling to Ewood Park for an FA Cup replay.
It remains to be seen if Benitez makes a number of changes to his starting XI against Blackburn, with a crucial clash at home to Cardiff coming up at the weekend.
Neil Warnock’s Welsh side will travel to St James’ Park on Saturday one point and one place above their relegation rivals.
