But Allardyce felt like his former side acted too quickly, and they should have had more faith in the former Preston North End man.
“I thought they had it [the right man in charge]. Simon Grayson is an outstanding manager, there’s no doubt about it,” Allardyce said. “I thought he was the perfect choice, but the rot must have set in for Sunderland.
“That club needs a manager with great experience to pull it all together and make sure they don’t get relegated again.”
Allardyce is the last manager to be successful at Sunderland, with the North East side suffering badly since his departure.
The Black Cats were relegated from the Premier League last term, and they are now sat at the bottom of the Championship table.
Sunderland have won just once in the league all season, with fears rising that back-to-back relegations are on the cards.
Sunderland are still searching for Grayson’s successor, despite having over two weeks to find a new manager.
At the moment Robbie Stockdale is in caretaker charge of the Black Cats.
