Everton are said to be interested in appointing the PSV Eindhoven sporting director.
On the list of people/things most popular with supporters of Everton FC, Sam Allardyce and The Sun are unlikely to feature very highly.
The Everton manager and tabloid newspaper have both been speaking about the Toffees’ alleged pursuit of Marcel Brands on Friday, with each saying seemingly different things.
According to Allardyce, there is some substance behind reports linking Everton with a move for Brands, the PSV Eindhoven sporting director.
“I read the same papers as you and the same online stories,” the 63-year-old said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
“Obviously there’s some light in it because of what’s coming out of PSV, but at the moment I can’t speculate on what’s going to happen and what position he’s taking up until my bosses ring me up and say ‘right Sam this is what’s happening let’s sit down and see the way we go forward.’
“Until that happens I can’t speculate on that.”
Yet despite those claims, The Sun reported only a few hours later that there has in fact been no contact between Brands and Everton, who are apparently ‘yet to speak to PSV’ about the 56-year-old’s availability.
Although the newspaper went on to add ‘it is understood’ that Everton enquired about Brands a year ago, but cooled their interest ‘not long after the start of the season’.
Which one (or both, or neither) is telling the truth, however, is down to you to decide.
