Newcastle United host Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday, looking for their first win over the Citizens since Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie scored in January 2019.

Rondon and Ritchie scored to claim last Newcastle win over Manchester City

Eddie Howe will seek to end Newcastle United’s six-game search for a Premier League win over Manchester City on Sunday, August 21. The Citizens have produced a prolific run over the Magpies in the past three years, winning in each of their last five top-flight encounters.

Pep Guardiola’s Etihad Stadium natives have also claimed clean sheets in four of their wins to three goals conceded. Newcastle struck their only efforts past Ederson since last beating his side during a 3-4 defeat under Steve Bruce in May 2021, having twice let their lead slip.

Bruce only took one point in meetings with the Citizens whilst stood at the St James’ Park helm. He oversaw a 2-2 draw in November 2019 while attempting to follow Rafa Benitez in taking a win over Guardiola. The Spaniard had beat his compatriot 10 months earlier 2-1.

Sergio Aguero broke the deadlock for Manchester City 24 seconds into the top-flight affair on Tyneside in January 2019. David Silva met Raheem Sterling’s cross to head across to the Argentine, who hit 15 goals in 14 Premier League meetings with the Magpies in his career.

Aguero had the ball in the back of the net a second time against Benitez’s side, as well. But referee Paul Tierney brought play back as Kevin De Bruyne delivered a free-kick before the official called for the game to resume. And two defensive lapses then removed City’s lead.

Poor play from the visiting side allowed Salomon Rondon a chance to equalise in the 66th-minute. He made no mistake to instinctively connect with Isaac Hayden’s header from 12-yards out. And a mistake by Fernandinho soon saw Tierney point to the spot for a penalty.

Sean Longstaff caught Fernandinho trying to overplay at the back, and broke into the box before the Brazilian fouled the midfielder. Matt Ritchie stepped up to the spot after a two minute delay as Ederson received treatment, and put the ball out of the Brazilian’s reach.

The win moved Benitez’s Newcastle up to 14th in the table with a five point margin to the relegation zone. It also dealt a blow to Manchester City’s title hopes with 14 fixtures to go, sitting four points off Liverpool having played a game more, but won the title by one point.

Manchester City will now travel to Newcastle this Sunday as one of just two sides boasting perfect starts to the season with Arsenal. The Toon, meanwhile, sit in fifth place after one win and a draw, as Howe prepares to target the Magpies’ first win over City in three years.

Martin Dubravka (GK): Man City rarely tested Slovakian in Newcastle’s last win

Manchester City seldom tested Martin Dubravka in the Newcastle goal after Tierney rulled out Aguero’s second. The Citizens came close to beating the Slovakian for a second time in the early stages of the second-half through Sterling and David Silva, as well, but to no avail.

DeAndre Yedlin (RWB): Defender now in MLS with David Beckham’s Inter Miami

DeAndre Yedlin enjoyed 125 appearances for Newcastle between joining from Tottenham Hotspur for £5m in 2016 and joining Galatasaray for free in 2021. Benitez offered the right-back – now at David Beckham’s Inter Miami since February 2022 – 95 of his Toon outings.

Jamaal Lascelles (CB): Captained Newcastle to last win over Manchester City

Jamaal Lascelles captained Newcastle to their last victory over Manchester City in January 2019. The defender signed for the Magpies in 2014, and has gone on to amass 214 games with the Tyneside natives across all competitions since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2015.

Florian Lejeune (CB): Deportivo Alaves-owned defender denied Silva a goal

Florian Lejeune denied Manchester City a chance to double their lead shortly before half-time in Newcastle’s last win over the Etihad Stadium side. The defender blocked a header from Silva inside the six-yard area to keep the Magpies within reach entering the interval.

He remained at the Toon to 2021 and completing a permanent move to Deportivo Alaves after spending 2020/21 on loan. But the 31-year-old will ply his trade at Rayo Vallecano in the 2022/23 campaign after completing a temporary switch earlier in the summer window.

Fabian Schar (CB): Man of the Match in last Newcastle win over Manchester City

Fabian Schar was the Man of the Match during Newcastle’s last win over Manchester City. Per BBC Sport, the Swiss star stood out with six tackles, six clearances and produced three interceptions to keep Guardiola’s forwards out with a stellar defensive display at St James’.

Matt Ritchie (LWB): Scored winner in last Newcastle win over Manchester City

Ritchie kept his nerve to convert the decisive penalty after waiting more than two minutes while Ederson received treatment. Benitez had fielded the Scot as a wing-back for the top-flight encounter, which returned one of Ritchie’s 24 goals in 188 games for the Toon so far.

Isaac Hayden (CDM): Assisted Rondon to score in last Newcastle win over Man City

Hayden nodded the ball on for Rondon to equalise in the 66th-minute of Newcastle’s last win over Manchester City. It was just one of the 27-year-old’s 10 assists for the Magpies in 171 appearances across all competitions, before joining Norwich City on loan for 2022/23.

Sean Longstaff (CDM): Fernandinho fouled midfielder for winning penalty

Fernandinho tripped Longstaff for what would prove to be the winning penalty after being caught in possession. The Toon talent had only broken into the Magpies’ first-team under Benitez in December 2018, and now has 97 senior appearances with his hometown team.

Ayoze Perez (RW): Winger wasted early chance to draw Benitez’s men level

Ayoze Perez wasted an early chance to draw Benitez’s men level after Aguero had broken the deadlock. The Spaniard dragged his effort wide of the post on 13 minutes, but ended the 2018/19 Premier League term with eight goals to seal a £30m switch to Leicester City.

Salomon Rondon (ST): Scored equaliser in last Newcastle win vs Manchester City

Rondon volleyed home to put Newcastle level with one of his rare chances to find the back of Ederson’s net. Benitez had often relied on the Venezuelan – now with Everton signed by the Spaniard in 2021 – to hold play up, bring teammates up the pitch and relieve pressure.

Christian Atsu (LW): Winger saw his best effort blocked over Ederson’s bar

Christian Atsu’s best chance to impact the game was deflected over the bar as Newcastle last beat Manchester City. The forward, who joined the Toon on loan from Chelsea in 2016 before his £6m move, only scored eight goals in 121 games before joining Al-Raed in 2021.
