Mo Salah staying at Liverpool might’ve just got a little more realistic.
The 29-year-old is out of contract at Liverpool in the summer of 2023.
There’s been widespread speculation about him leaving Anfield for most of the past 12 months, exacerbated by a perceived failure to agree new terms on Merseyside.
The former Chelsea and Roma attacker scooped a number of individual awards this past season but the big ones – the Champions League and Premier League – slipped out of the Reds’ grasp.
Salah has rather randomly decided to react on Instagram to winning Playmaker of the Year and his Golden Boot – shared with Tottenham’s Son Heung-min – but interestingly, the player has also dropped a major hint about staying at Liverpool after revealing that he wishes next season would begin tomorrow.
He wrote: “Being recognised by the fans and by the sports journalists in the same season is something special that I will never forget. I would however give all those personal awards up for a chance at replaying that final, but that is not how football works. I cannot express in words how much we wanted to bring that trophy back to Liverpool but in the end we couldn’t. I cannot thank the fans enough for your support. It has been a very long season but a part of me wishes the next one starts again tomorrow.”
Mo Salah staying at Liverpool?
Well, you could argue this is the player’s biggest hint yet.
Salah is well aware of the speculation and doubt surrounding his long-term future at Liverpool.
And given the respect he has for the fanbase, there’s no way that the player would heavily tease the prospect of staying on Merseyside like this if he wasn’t going to.
With Liverpool set to lose Sadio Mane to one of Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, it’s extra important now that Salah signs a new contract.
The duo have been two of Jurgen Klopp’s most influential performers down the years, firing the club to Champions League and Premier League success in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
Losing both would be detrimental in the short term – echoed by Steven Gerrard last weekend – but, if Salah’s Instagram post is anything to go by, he isn’t going anywhere.
Based on his comments, he is clearly wounded by the club’s failure to add to their FA Cup and Carabao Cup in recent weeks and after admitting he wishes next season began tomorrow, it’s safe to say he means Liverpool’s 2022-23 campaign.
