Southampton reportedly interested in signing Bruno Martins Indi in January transfer window

Southampton should steer clear of trying to sign Porto’s Bruno Martins Indi this summer, after reports of their interest emerged this morning.

The Daily Star report that Southampton are interested in the possibility of signing Bruno Martins Indi in January, but it is a transfer which doesn’t make sense for a number of reasons.

Martins Indi only joined Porto this summer and for him to depart the Portuguese giants so soon after arriving would be a major surprise.

The Dutch international is still only 22 and was signed as a long-term prospect by Porto, so for them to relinquish him within six months of signing him seems unlikely.

Although the centre-back can clearly be seen as a talent, the defensive strength of the Saints side so far this season has been one of the major reasons behind their success.

The Saints have had the sturdiest backline of any team in England this campaign and breaking up that defence is unlikely to be something which Ronald Koeman is thinking of.

The partnership of Jose Fonte and Toby Alderweireld has proven to be a formidable one and has helped the team keep more clean-sheets than any other side in the country so far.

Alderweireld is only on loan at St. Mary’s currently, but the club are reportedly working hard to tie him down to a permanent deal in the near future from Atletico Madrid.

It’s arguable Koeman’s side would be far better off pursuing this option rather than bringing in a new body to their team.

The Saints have stumbled on a successful formula and bringing in a centre-back who would be expecting to be a first-team regular would be a non-sensical move, when they are currently proving to be such a force.
