The Saints put in a superb performance as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s charges hammered their bitter rivals on their own turf.

Southampton ace Jan Bednarek has taken to Twitter today to rejoice in the Saints’ 4-0 thrashing of bitter rivals Portsmouth in the League Cup.
The 23-year-old centre-back was impressive for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side at Fratton Park, helping shore up his side’s back line as Pompey made a bright start in the South Coast derby.
Southampton were under pressure at various points of the game but Bednarek was regularly first to the ball and also weighed in with several crucial headers away.
His contributions were key in Southampton going on to record their first win on their rivals’ own turf since 1984, complete with emphatic scoreline.
Here is what Bednarek wrote on Twitter and the response by some of the St Mary’s faithful:
Although Portsmouth did begin brightly and weighed in with numerous attacks against their Premier League opponents, Southampton soaked up the pressure and took their chances, with boyhood Saint Danny Ings breaking the deadlock on 21 minutes.
He then doubled his tally and his side’s advantage just before the interval, while Cedric Soares and Nathan Redmond got on the scoresheet in the latter stages of the game to make it a day to remember for the Southampton contingent.
Up next for the Saints is Saturday’s Premier League trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Arena to face Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs, who were knocked out of the League Cup by Colchester United.
