The former Celtic striker has praised Marshall, and believes that if Celtic are unable to sign Forster from Southampton in the summer transfer window, then they should go for the Scotland international goalkeeper.
According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic manager Neil Lennon wants to bring the 32-year-old back to Celtic Park for the 2020-21 campaign, but the goalkeeper has decided to stay at Southampton and fight for his place.
The Herald has reported that Celtic are looking at Marshall, who himself is ready to leave Wigan Athletic and move back to his former club this summer.
Sutton wrote in The Daily Record: “I don’t know if Lennon rates David Marshall or thinks he’s good enough to be his out-and-out No.1, but he’s the one that I would be looking at just now in terms of a safe bet.
“Is he as good as Forster? No. But he does have an awful lot going for him in terms of Celtic’s situation right now.
“By that I mean he knows the environment, he knows the pressures of playing for the club. He was doing it as a teenager in the team I played in alongside the likes of Henrik Larsson and Lennon himself.
“Marshall lost his spot to Boruc when Gordon Strachan arrived and didn’t reach massive heights in England.
“But the fact of the matter is that he’s the Scotland No.1 at the moment. He has gained lots of experiences in over 10 years south of the border and you wouldn’t imagine he’d be panicked or fazed. Wigan’s sorry crash into administration surely makes him easier to buy as well.”
Good signing for Celtic?
Forster was superb for Celtic this past season during his loan spell from Southampton and was one of the best players for the Hoops.
While the former Newcastle United prospect would be a good signing again this summer, Marshall would not be a bad alternative.
The 35-year-old started his professional club football career at Celtic and has extensive experience in England, and he would make an immediate impact on the team.
