Preston North End manager Ryan Lowe admits missing out on Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer to Championship rivals Middlesbrough was ‘disappointing’, speaking via the Teesside Live.

In the blinking of an eye, Middlesbrough have gone from relegation candidates to promotion dark horses.

Isn’t that just the way of it in England’s madcap second tier? Where a team can rise from 21st to fifth in the space of just 10 games, Manchester United legend Michael Carrick winning 70 per cent of his matches since replacing the vastly more experienced Chris Wilder in the Riverside dugout.

Now, with one of England’s most exciting young marksmen arriving on loan for the rest of the season, the smart money may be on a rejuvenated Boro side becoming 2023’s answer to Nottingham Forest; from League One nightmares to dreams of the Premier League via a remarkable rise up the table.

Archer scored seven times in 18 starts during his previous Championship stint at Preston North End. With only Cardiff City having found the net more infrequently than Preston this term, the Lilywhites were understandably hoping to see Archer return to familiar surroundings.

The 21-year-old to instead opted for a new challenge on Teesside.

Middlesbrough beat Championship rivals Preston to Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer

“Yeah, probably,” Lowe sighed when asked if Preston missed out on Archer. “But it wasn’t for any other reason than Cam’s choice. We gave Aston Villa everything they asked for financially, to get him, which pleased me as the manager.

“We put everything on the table to get him and the kid has chosen Middlesbrough ahead of us. Disappointing, of course. But we have to respect Cameron’s decision with what he wanted to do.

“I haven’t spoken to him about the decision. I’ve spoken to his representatives of course. The minute we knew he was available was the minute we spoke, and I’ve spoken to Cam throughout the season really. I’d spoken to him on a Zoom and we’d spoken with the family.

“He wanted to make the right decision for him and his career. Sadly, for us, he’s going to choose Middlesbrough and we just have to look somewhere else.

“We were down to the last two (clubs). There is no animosity. I will wish him all the best, just not against us!”

Archer joins the Championship’s most prolific player in Carrick’s Middlesbrough squad. No one in the division has scored more goals this term (13) than Chuba Akpom.
