Sadio Mane’s AFCON run means Harry Wilson must get his chance at Liverpool.
There’s no stopping Sadio Mane right now. Perhaps only Jurgen Klopp can.
Mane finished as the joint Golden Boot winner in the Premier League last season, won the Champions League, and has now fired Senegal in the African Cup of Nations quarter-finals.
He has three goals in three games, and there are more to come.
But Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp needs to ensure Mane gets a full rest after his extended season.
Mohamed Salah also needs one, while Roberto Firmino has been at the Copa America with Brazil.
This stretches Liverpool’s attack at the start of the season and Xherdan Shaqiri’s injury is not well timed.
This puts young star Harry Wilson in line to show what he can do.
Wilson has been prolific on loan spells over the past 18 months and Hull and Derby.
He can play across the forward line and Liverpool cannot afford to be charitable and send him out on loan again, at least until January.
The Welsh wonderkid may be unproven at Premier League level, but he has surpassed every challenge put in front of him so far.
It’s time he got a shot, and Liverpool might really need him, with Mane’s continuing success at the AFCON meaning he could miss the start of the season.
