Arsenal fans have been left sad after Martin Odegaard suggested to TV2 that he has deleted his Twitter account due to abuse.
What’s the story?
Odegaard no longer has a social media presence on the website after removing his account on the platform.
And the Arsenal playmaker has now revealed that his decision was made due to criticism he had received online.
He said: “You must be careful what you expose yourself to.
“I don’t need to sit there and see all that. A lot of anonymity and strange things. It could be bad and scary if your head is not in the right place.”
And the comments left Arsenal fans upset that their 22-year-old no longer felt comfortable on social media.
More needs to be done
It is indeed a sad state of affairs when a player feels the need to come off a social media platform due to abuse.
There have been multiple calls for Twitter to do more to protect people from abuse on their website.
While that may be one solution, it is such a shame that so many people feel comfortable messaging abuse from behind a computer screen, with such disregard for the recipient’s feelings.
We can only hope that there comes a time when Odegaard feels that Twitter has become a safer space for him to use again.
Since signing for Arsenal permanently this summer, Odegaard has made 10 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side, scoring once and claiming one assist.
