Jan Vertonghen has just announced on Twitter that he is leaving Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The Belgium international central defender has sent an emotional message to everyone connected with the club, including the fans.
The 33-year-old joined Tottenham from Ajax back in 2012 and was a key player in the team over the years.
The veteran defender played a huge role in Spurs transforming from challengers for the Champions League places to establishing themselves as regulars in the Premier League top four.
Vertonghen is leaving Spurs now, and he has sent a message to the fans on Twitter, and has stated that it is “a sad day”.
Signing a replacement defender
Vertonghen’s exit will perhaps see Tottenham sign a replacement central defender in the summer transfer window.
Juan Foyth has not really made much progress at Spurs, and maybe head coach Jose Mourinho will be looking to sign an established centre-back.
Tottenham will be looking to finish in the top four of the Premier League table next season after failing to clinch a Champions League place this campaign.
