Sheffield Wednesday’s flaws were exposed once more as the Owls suffered their third straight defeat, against Preston last night.

Wednesday accrued four points from a possible six against Nottingham Forest and Bristol City after their return to Championship action last month, and could take plenty positives from their subsequent results two against West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City, despite the negative outcomes.

But the manner of the Owls’ 3-1 loss to Preston, their struggling opponents who were trailing in the 77th minute at Hillsborough, brought with it the strongest sense yet of the club’s impending doom.

Third at Christmas, just seven points now separate 16th-placed Sheffield Wednesday and third-from-bottom Hull, who will have at least one eye on the EFL’s ongoing case against the Owls given the prospect of docked points for their Yorkshire rivals.

In that time, Garry Monk’s record as Wednesday manager has gone from being the sixth-best ever to worse than those of Chris Turner, Alan Irvine and Jos Luhukay (data courtesy of Peter Løhmann on Twitter).

But Monk’s job, for now, does not appear to be under threat.

Nevertheless, the following Owls fans have already turned their attention towards one potential replacement.

Lowe, who played an important role in Sheffield Wednesday’s return to the Championship as a player, has achieved promotions in each of his first two seasons as a manager (with Bury and Plymouth Argyle).

Wednesday will face the latter club if they are relegated this campaign.
