Fulham ace Ryan Sessegnon has been linked to Tottenham but the side he scored against last weekend, Newcastle, should be paying attention.
Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon in action
If Newcastle were not aware of Ryan Sessegnon before last weekend they will be now.
The teenager scored twice to earn Fulham a shock 3-1 win at St James’ Park, putting his side in contention to land a play-off spot, a result they could not build on against Blackburn in midweek.
Sessegnon is just 16, and has had no trouble at all adapting to the rigours of Championship football.
He has been strongly linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, with The Mail reporting last month they were confident they could do a deal.
But if Sessegnon wants to continue his progress, he should avoid a move to Spurs, otherwise he will face an extended spell on the sidelines.
Spurs have the excellent Danny Rose as their first choice left-back, and the England international recently signed a new contract.
Ben Davies has been making improvements as his back up this season, and he too signed a contract last week. His ability to shift and play as part of a back three makes Mauricio Pochettino even more likely to hold onto him.
Sessegnon would find himself in a similar situation as DeAndre Yedlin did at Tottenham. He was signed and then sent out on loan twice, because he had Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier in front of him.
Going back to paying under-23 football at this point would be a waste of time for him, Sessegnon needs to play.
A better move would be a switch to Newcastle, who appear destined to return to the Premier League next season.
Newcastle’s starting left-back at the weekend was the uninspiring Paul Dummett, and Sessegnon possesses an upside he simply doesn’t have.
Getting the opportunity to work under Champions League winner and former Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez is also surely another attraction.
Sessegnon on one side and Yedlin in the other full-back spot would be an exciting combination, and if Fulham do not land promotion themselves, the youngster should consider a move to Newcastle if an offer comes in.
