England Under-21’s beat Turkey 2-1 on Tuesday evening, claiming a narrow win at Molineux.
Aidy Boothroyd’s Young Lions took the lead in the first half, as Ryan Sessegnon’s darting run opened up the Turkey defence, with defender Huseyin Turkmen turning Sessegnon’s cross into his own net.
The big moment of the game came with just two minutes to play, as Eddie Nketiah found the net having had two goals ruled out and then hit the post with penalty.
Nketiah was chasing the accolade of being England Under-21’s record goalscorer, and it looked like it just wasn’t going to be his night.
However, Sessegnon produced another moment of quality as he danced in from the right flank and threaded a superb ball into Nketiah, who kept his composure to score.
Halil Dervisoglu bagged a late consolation for Turkey, but it was England and Nketiah’s night as he passed Alan Shearer and Francis Jeffers to become England Under-21’s leading goalscorer.
That’s now 14 goals in just 12 games for Nketiah, whose goalscoring form in an England shirt is frankly astonishing.
Tottenham talent Sessegnon – currently on loan at Hoffenheim – put the North London rivalry aside to congratulate Nketiah, admitting that he was happy to help him break the record by setting up the all-important goal.
