Ryan Mason has told Sky Sports that former club Tottenham Hotspur should make a ‘huge statement’ by re-signing Gareth Bale this summer.

Bale’s future at Real Madrid is once again in doubt after he was booed off the field by his own fans in Sunday’s 1-0 El Clasico defeat by Barcelona at the Bernabeu.

The Mirror then reported that Real were willing to offer £50 million and Bale in a player-plus-cash deal for Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen.

Spurs will have their first full season in the new stadium next term, and Mason says that there’s no better way to mark that celebration by bringing back the legendary Welshman, who previously spent six years in North London until 2013.

He told Sky Sports: “Bale could play anywhere, but I think for Tottenham it would be a huge statement signing, improve their front line and in wide positions.

“Why not make him that marquee signing as they move into that new stadium?

“The type of mentality he has, he’ll be thinking: ‘Where can I go and impact things and win things?’ He’ll want to go and make the rest of his career as successful as possible.”

Bale is still only 29 and although his speed will undoubtedly decline in the coming years, he could still be a massive player for Spurs, if he were to join.

But is it worth losing Eriksen? Potentially. The Dane might be on borrowed time at Tottenham anyway, with his contract expiring in 2020, so £50 million and Bale might well tempt the Lilywhites’ chief Daniel Levy.
