Ryan Mason has told TalkSport that he believes Tottenham Hotspur can still win the Premier League title this season, despite sitting six points behind new leaders Liverpool.
Spurs currently sit in third place in the Premier League after a comfortable 2-0 win over Leicester City thanks to goals from Son Heung-min and Dele Alli – with Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen rested.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have picked up 12 wins from just 16 Premier League matches, sitting on 36 points in the league – having lost four games. But Spurs are six points behind leaders Liverpool, and five behind Manchester City.
But former Spurs midfielder and icon Mason, 27, is still of the belief that they will mount a title challenge, and reckons the Christmas period is crucial for Spurs if they are indeed to hunt City and Liverpool down.
“I’ve said it all season, I really believe it,” Mason said. “They have a manager in his fifth season, they’ve got a squad of players who know each other inside out and they’ve challenged a couple of times.
“It’s suiting them at the minute, with all the talk about Liverpool and Man City. They’re quietly going about their business, winning games. They’re within touching distance. Towards the end of January we’ll have a clearer picture.”
Son Heung-min opened the scoring for Spurs at the start of the second half with a wonderful curling effort, before Dele Alli notched his 50th strike in all competitions for Tottenham since joining the club from MK Dons.
Pochettino takes his side to familiar surroundings on Tuesday night as Spurs go up against his former side Espanyol’s rivals Barcelona in the Champions League at the Nou Camp – a game they may have to win if they are to qualify for the last 16 of the competition.
