Tottenham Hotspur did name Ryan Mason in their Premier League squad at the start of the season.
Tottenham Hotspur were left indebted to the performance of a much forgotten talent in midweek, as Ryan Mason struck a wonder goal and put in an exceptional performance to down Nottingham Forest in the Capital One Cup.
Before he came into the fray Tottenham were lacking in creativity in the final third and struggling to get the better of their Championship rivals – who went 1-0 up through a Jorge Grant goal at hite Hart Lane.
It was certainly an excellent turnaround for the player, who had seemingly been forgotten after loan spells with the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Lorient and Swindon Town.
Mauricio Pochettino said of Mason after the game:
“He played on Monday for the Under-21s at Sunderland and today he had the possibility to be in the squad.
“He showed his talent and I am happy for him because he deserved this performance and this goal.”
But while his performance and goal were eye-catching it was widely believed that we would not be seeing much of Mason, as match commentary on the game stated he was not in the Tottenham Hotspur Premier League squad.
But it is clear that this is not the case – Mason could feature against Arsenal this weekend.
A look at the official Premier League squad lists for the upcoming season has Ryan Glen Mason named below Hugo Lloris and Kyle Naughton as the 15th member of the squad.
Because of Tottenham’s sales this summer, the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Michael Dawson, Jake Livermore and Zeki Fryers all leaving, they were short of home-grown players for their squad.
With a maximum of 17 non home-grown players some had to go, such as Lewis Holtby, and Mason along with Cristian Ceballos were drafted into the original 25.
So Mason could very well play in the Premier League, starting this weekend.
