The former Spurs player retired earlier this week because of a head injury.
This week has seen Ryan Mason call time on his football career after 13 months of injury torment. The former England midfielder fractured his skull playing for Hull City v Chelsea last year and, after heeding the advice of doctors, he has decided to hang up his boots.
It was news that was received at Tottenham Hotspur with heavy hearts. Spurs is where Mason grew up and where he first made his name and Mauricio Pochettino was one of the first to come out and commend Mason on his bravery and determination throughout a tough time in his career.
He also made it clear that there will always be a place for Mason at Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer AM this weekend Mason, 26, admitted that if he did get into coaching a return to Tottenham would make sense:
“I’m going to see what I fall into but if I was to go down the coaching route I spent 18 years at Tottenham and that’s my club so I’m sure that would be in my DNA if I was a coach.”
Spurs do tend to look after their own. Ledley King is still with the club and Kieran McKenna built a great reputation at Spurs after retiring at 22, before heading to Manchester United.
Mason is a bright young man and with his footballing intelligence could easily find himself a pathway into the game.
For now, it seems he is happy to just spend some time with his family and will enjoy some time off without pursuing a route back into the game.
But if and when he does, Tottenham will clearly be waiting for him.
