Plymouth Argyle boss Ryan Lowe has told the Plymouth Herald that he doesn’t think Rangers loanee Zak Rudden could have done much better with a late chance.

Plymouth were in action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Oldham Athletic at Home Park in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Just moments after Byron Moore had seemingly given Argyle the win, Oldham hit back through a David Wheater header to rescue a point.

Argyle did though have a chance to win it, as loan striker Rudden squandered an opportunity from close range, with Gary Woods making a key save in the 89th minute.

That means that Rudden is still waiting for his first Plymouth goal, having signed on loan from Rangers back on August 23rd.

The 19-year-old will spend six months with Argyle in order to pick up first-team experience, and it would have been understandable for a young striker to lose a bit of confidence after that late chance.

However, boss Lowe has moved to defend him, suggesting that he couldn’t really do any more with his chance, and backed him to keep getting in those areas to score goals in the future.

Lowe also explained why he brought Rudden on as a substitute, as he wanted to get down the sides of the Oldham defence, meaning he seemingly has a clear role in Lowe’s side, which will be a boost for Steven Gerrard.

“Rudden for Taylor was because we wanted to get down sides. That’s what Rudden gives you, whereas it sticks with Tayls and you play off him,” said Lowe. “When it was coming into Tayls he never had enough options, to be fair to him. We wanted to get Byron and Rudden down the sides, which I thought worked well because Rudden has had a great chance towards the end.”

“Sometimes, as a striker, you can’t do any more. He has done more than enough. He has just missed out but he will keep getting in them areas,” he added.
