Team USA, including Scottie Scheffler, experienced a challenging Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, ultimately losing to Europe with a final score of 15-13.

Scheffler did manage a win over Rory McIlroy in their singles match on Sunday, contributing to a strong final-day push from the Americans.

But it was not enough, as Europe held on to retain the cup and secure a rare away win.

The world number one picked up his only point of the week in that singles match against McIlroy, despite playing all five sessions.

Scheffler had a remarkable season that included two major titles, but his Ryder Cup week finished with a disappointing 1-4-0 record.

His performance was evaluated on the Golf Channel Podcast with Rex & Lav, where Ryan Lavner said: “I gave him a C- after going one and four.

“He was the third-best US player through two days but it wasn’t good enough. His opponents went berserk against him. 34 birdies in 65 holes.

“They met the moment but Scottie Scheffler did not. He called it one of the lowest moments of his career.

“His teammates picked him up and he ended up salvaging his week with a pillow fight victory over Rory McIlroy.”

Rex Hoggard felt that his partner’s analysis was generous. Then he shared a more critical view.

“You gave the world number one a C- and he won just one point out of five opportunities?

“That is some kind stuff right there. I think the Sunday singles salvaged the week for him but I gave him a D.”

A closer look at how Scottie Scheffler performed during the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is unlike anything else on tour, and while Scheffler is normally reliable in stroke play events, he struggled to make an impact this time around.

He had hoped to contribute more for Team USA at Bethpage Black, especially given his status as world number one.

Scheffler and Russell Henley started off with a 5&3 loss to Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick in foursomes. He then lost 3&2 to Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka while paired with J.J. Spaun in Saturday four-balls.

The same format followed on Saturday, where Scheffler and Henley were edged out by Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland by one hole, before teaming up with Bryson DeChambeau to lose 3&2 against Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.

Scheffler did finish strong by taking down McIlroy by just one shot in their singles match – giving Team USA a little hope late in Sunday’s round at Bethpage Black.
