Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers have signed Ryan Hardie to a new contract.

Ryan Hardie of St Mirren misses a fine chance during the match beTFRED Cup Group Stage match between St Mirren and Edinburgh City at St Mirren Park on July 30, 2016 in Paisley, Scotland.

Rangers announced on Friday that Ryan Hardie had signed a one-year contract extension.

The 21-year-old was weeks away from being released from the Ibrox side as a free agent, but it looks manager Steven Gerrard has saw fit to award the young striker with a new deal – and it’s an excellent decision.

Whatever club you support, there is nothing as exciting as seeing one of your own flourish in the first team and Hardie, a Gers’ academy product, is certainly capable of doing that in years to come.

The 6’2 hitman has enjoyed a number of very productive spells at Championship clubs in recent years, including scoring eight goals in 15 starts for Livingston during the second half of last season.

Injury brought about a premature end to the season for Hardie, but he had already sent a very clear message to Rangers with that goal return and it’s probably the reason why Gerrard kept hold of him.

It remains to be seen whether the Scotland Under-21 international can be the red-hot striker that the Blues need in the Premiership, but he certainly has talent and age on his side, and Gerrard has made the right call.

Little to lose, plenty to gain for the Gers.
