West Ham United defender Ryan Fredericks has urged Manuel Pellegrini not to ‘spend a fortune’ on another right-back because he can do the job next season.

The 26-year-old moved to the London Stadium last summer when his contract at then-promoted side Fulham expired, but his season has been thwarted by an ankle injury.

He has been battling with Pablo Zabaleta for a first-team spot, but he has been starting three of West Ham’s last four league matches, including their 3-0 win against Southampton over the weekend.

Speaking in his post-match interview after that home win against the Saints, Fredericks told Match of the Day on BBC One (04/05/2019 at 11:25 pm), that the club doesn’t need to waste their money on another player in his position.

“Since I’ve come back [from injury] the manager has been good to me,” Fredricks told Match of the Day. “He’s put me in, I’ve played a few games and hopefully I have shown him that he doesn’t have to go out and spend a fortune on another right-back. I can do the job next season.”

Last season, in the Championship, Fredericks was one of the best right-backs in the league and he was one of the main reasons behind Fulham’s promotion.

Injuries have harmed his chances of proving his worth this term, but given the fact that Pellegrini is now giving him chances, he could play a big part for the club next season.

Over the course of this campaign, the forward-thinking fullback has played 17 matches for the club in all competitions, scoring two goals and supplying his teammates with one assist [transfermarkt].
