Despite not playing a single minute in this season’s Champions League knockout stages this season, he was handed a recall away to Atletico Madrid, as Jose Mourinho shuffled the defence to allow for Branislav Ivanovic’s suspension.
And Cole looked like he had never been away, helping the Blues to a clean sheet.
His performance impressed last season’s understudy Ryan Bertrand, who is currently on loan at Aston Villa.
Cesar Azpilicueta’s surprise switch to left-back has displaced both Englishmen from the left-back spot this season, while Cole has been rumoured in the last 24 hours to be considering a summer switch to Real Madrid.
This display could be part of his last hurrah for Chelsea, or it may just be part of a renaissance which keeps him at the club.
