The Chelsea defender will make his loan deal at St Mary’s permanent, according to reports.

According to the Daily Mirror, Southampton could sign Ryan Bertrand on a permanent basis as early as January.

The Chelsea defender has impressed during his time on loan at St Mary’s and Southampton want to take the full-back on full-time.

Whether this is done in January or the summer, the report states that the South Coast side are determined to sign the Chelsea defender for good.

The possibility is there, however, for the 25-year-old to become a full Southampton player during the January transfer window.

As Opta stats show, Bertrand has excelled going forward for the Saints so far this Premier League season, creating 14 chances and landing 14 accurate crosses.

Only three Southampton players have created more chances, with just Dusan Tadic making more accurate crosses.

Defensively, meanwhile, Bertrand’s tally of 20 tackles won is only beaten by five members of Ronald Koeman’s squad.

With Chelsea’s current defensive options suiting Jose Mourinho well, then, it looks as though Southampton signing Bertrand on a permanent deal makes absolute sense for all involved.
