Goldson could replace the former Rangers loanee at Ibrox next season, after Steven Gerrard reportedly developed an interest.

Russell Martin of Rangers hits the post with a header during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Russell Martin has told the Argus that he would recommend joining Rangers to any player, despite his own difficult Ibrox spell.

Martin has returned to Norwich City after spending five months on loan with Rangers – a period he admitted was ‘a bit wrong place, wrong time’.

But the Scotland international believes the Ibrox ship is slowly being steadied and suggested that Rangers would be a good move for Connor Goldson, the Brighton and Hove Albion defender who is being tipped to replace him in Glasgow.

Discussing his time north of the border, Martin, a lifelong Brighton fan, said: “I don’t think anything can prepare you for it. It’s huge. You’ve got an idea but it’s only when you go up there that you realise how big it is. Just walking around the streets, it’s a giant of a football club with a great fanbase.

Rangers fans are seen during the Scottish Cup Quarter final match between Rangers and Hamilton Academical at Ibrox Stadium on March 4, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“For me it was a bit wrong place, wrong time. The club was a bit all over the place and then a change of manager, who was an interim manager anyway (Graeme Murty). But I loved playing for a football club of that size and that support.”

Giving Goldson a glimpse of what life would be like should his proposed £3 million transfer to Steven Gerrard’s side materialise, Martin added: “Every team, especially playing for Rangers or Celtic, it’s a cup final every game, teams are desperate to beat you so you have to cope with that pressure and expectancy.

“It will certainly be different for him. I guess for Connor at this stage of his career it will be for him to decide whether he wants to go up the road and compete to win things or whether he has got a burning desire to stay here and try to get back in the Premier League and play in the Championship regularly.

“That will be his decision but it is some football club. If anyone asked me would you sign there I’d always recommend doing it. It’s got everything there, it’s just waiting for lift-off.

“They’ve had a tough four or five years but they are slowly steadying the ship and turning it around.”

HITC Sport understands that Brighton have made a renewed bid for Reading defender Liam Moore – this one involving Seagulls striker Sam Baldock – whose arrival at the Amex Stadium could pave the way for Goldson’s departure to Rangers.
