Glasgow Rangers signing Russell Martin has featured alongside David Bates during both of his appearances for the Ibrox side.

Russell Martin of Rangers is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Russell Martin has told Rangers’ official website that he has been impressed by David Bates since his move to Ibrox, and insisted that their partnership is on the right path.

Martin is one of the raft of signings that Graeme Murty has made during the January transfer window, and like Sean Goss and Jamie Murphy, he has started both games since his loan switch from Norwich and the resumption of the Scottish Premiership season.

And in both games that the 32-year-old has played, he has had David Bates alongside him at the heart of the defence. And after the 2-1 victory over Ross County on Sunday, Martin suggested that he was excited regarding the potential that the pairing could have.

“Batesy as well is a really honest boy – he listens and he has really good attributes. The relationship we have at the minute is growing, and we have done well together,” he told the club’s official website.

One thing that Rangers have struggled to settle on this season is an established centre-back pairing, with a number of options being used so far and all getting brief runs in the side, often alongside a player that they have not played with frequently.

With just two games on the board, it is clearly too soon to ascertain whether Martin and Bates are going to be the partnership that give Murty the stability that he is looking for, but the early signs are certainly positive.

And Murty will be hoping that Martin’s experience will help Bates take his game onto the next level in the coming months as the 21-year-old has the potential to become a very important player for the side.
