Newcastle United fans on Twitter lauded Declan Rice’s performance during West Ham’s 4-2 win at St James’ Park on Sunday.

The 22-year-old didn’t start off the game in the manner he would have wanted because he was outfoxed after only a few minutes by Allan Saint-Maximin, who provided the assist for Callum Wilson’s opening goal.

It was a fast-paced start from both teams – and even though the home side were leading 2-1 at the break – they eventually were beaten 4-2 by the East London outfit.

Newcastle supporters were especially impressed by Rice’s second-half display that saw the combative midfielder dominate proceedings.

Rice was one of a number of English players who enjoyed a defining Euro 2020 after producing high-quality performances alongside Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the park.

It may have been a slow start from Rice today, but as soon as he got his engine going, Newcastle’s midfield found him difficult to handle.

That was pointed out by the Newcastle fans, who claimed that they need a player of his ilk in their team.

This could be the season that Rice could take his game to much higher levels because he is playing in Europe.

Given the talents the Hammers academy product has at his feet, he will want to make playing in Europe a regular occurrence.

Here is a selection of Newcastle supporters reacting to Rice’s performance today:
