Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has told reporters that Liverpool target Thiago Alcantara is keen for a new challenge, Bulinews report.

The Spain international midfielder’s contract at Bayern expires next summer.

A recent report from Bild claims Liverpool are keen on him, with manager Jurgen Klopp approving of Thiago’s arrival despite reservations over his age.

The same German editorial even claims the player has an agreement to join Premier League champions Liverpool should a deal be reached between the two clubs.

But Rummenigge says there has been no contract between the clubs, despite admitting that Thiago is keen for a new challenge away from the Bundesliga giants.

“Some time ago, Thiago told us that he would like to do something new before his career ends. To this date, we have not been in contact with any club about him. I don’t know if Thiago has talked to a potential new club himself. If these players [Thiago and David Alaba] decide not to extend their contracts, we will have to think about selling them. But I have to say that some of the numbers I have been reading make me laugh,” Rummenigge explained.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Thiago raises questions:

Liverpool coasted to the Premier League title this season.

But previous exits from the FA Cup and Champions League shows room for improvement. Klopp knows this and will surely look to act this summer.

Thiago, however, doesn’t exactly fit in with the Reds’ successful transfer philosophy.

Liverpool have pinpointed younger players who can mature into world class stars at Anfield. At 29, Thiago isn’t likely to get much better despite already possessing excellent technique, vision and passing ability.

Bayern, meanwhile, are said to want £36 million for the former Barcelona man.
