Reported Tottenham Hotspur target Jannik Vestergaard was so unlucky on Friday night.
Southampton held Leicester City to a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s, despite the hosts having 10 men for 80 minutes.
That’s because the big centre-back, who has been linked with a summer move to Tottenham, was sent off after only 10 minutes last night.
Vestergaard failed to control a simple pass deep in his own half, before Jamie Vardy looked to go through on goal.
But the Denmark international slid in, poked the ball away from Vardy but also caught the Leicester man with the follow through.
It was deemed a red card offence despite the fact that Vestergaard clearly got the ball.
And former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp, speaking to Sky Sports, has flipped over the decision, claiming that overly-harsh calls exactly like this are ‘ruining football’.
He said: “Even if it is, it is not 100 per cent Vardy is gonna get there. It is a clear and obvious error. I think all the players were bemused with it. We have to kick back with reality, it is ruining football, these decisions.”
Fortunately for Vestergaard, Spurs, if they’re genuinely interested, won’t exactly be crossing him off the target list.
Everybody can see it was another horrible call by a Premier League referee.
The Express reported in April that the Lilywhites’ chairman Daniel Levy was ramping up interest in the Southampton powerhouse, who cost £18 million in 2018 [Sky Sports].
