Wolverhampton Wanderers signed Rui Patricio on Monday.

Wolverhampton Wanderers announced the signing of Rui Patricio on Monday.
The Portugal goalkeeper joins Wolves on a four-year deal, after terminating his contract at Sporting Lisbon [BBC Sport]. At the moment the 30-year-old has signed as a free transfer, though FIFA “could yet intervene” and demand a tribunal fee, according to The Liverpool Echo.
Wolves were linked with a number of goalkeepers this summer, but the fact that they got a very good, potentially for free, has to be considered a major bargain.
In fact, you have to think that signing a goalkeeper of Patricio’s standing is a much better deal for Wanderers than spending £35 million on Jack Butland.

In May, The Express reported that Nuno was readying a £35 million swoop for the Stoke City goalkeeper, who was relegated to the Championship with the Potters last term.
Butland is a fine goalkeeper, and is five years younger than Patricio, but this is by far the better deal for the West Midlands side.
Wolves have plenty of money to throw around, but Butland would have made a serious dent in their budget.
This way, Nuno has saved the club a hell of a lot of money to use on strengthening other areas of the squad.
