Previous comments from Sakai’s former boss Rudi Garcia highlight why Tottenham are interested.
Garcia raved about Sakai’s performances in 2017, a year after the club signed him from Hannover.
Quoted by Footmercato, Garcia said: “We are happy to have found him.
“He brings athletic power, an interesting tactical culture and technique on our right side which is interesting for us.”
Sakai outlasted Garcia, and his new boss at Marseille is former Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas.
The 29-year-old is reportedly being lined up as a reinforcement at right-back for Spurs, with the club keen to sell both Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier.
The Japan international may be older than Tottenham’s usual profile of signings, but he is a player who won’t let Mauricio Pochettino down.
The way Garcia talked about him shows the admiration he earned from his manager, and he could easily win over the Spurs supporters with his committed displays.
