Newcastle United had been tracking Sporting Lisbon defender Ruben Semedo for much of the summer so far.

Ruben Semedo’s agent has confirmed to radio station TSF that his client will be moving to Spain, and not Newcastle United.
Semedo had been on Newcastle’s wishlist for much of the summer so far (Daily Star).
However, it seems that the Sporting Libson defender will not be making the switch to St. James’ Park.

“We are about to confirm the transfer of Ruben Semedo,” Semedo’s agent said.
”It’s probably Spain. I confirm Spain. We are looking forward to closing the deal today.
“We are working, yesterday was intense. “We are absolutely certain that there will probably be a conclusion today. Ruben was faced with several possibilities.
“It was in Spain that we found the best solution. Until this moment I can not confirm conclusively. He’s in a good way.”

It seems most likely that Villarreal are the Spanish club where Semedo is heading to, after their interest was reported.
Semedo’s decision not sign for Newcastle is a blow for Rafael Benitez’s side, who are eager to strengthen.
Newcastle are known to be keen to bolster their defensive ranks, as they look to compete back in the Premier League.
Semedo is one of a number of targets who Newcastle have been linked with already this summer, but Benitez’s side have only completed one signing so far, with Christian Atsu joining on a permanent deal.
