Back in 2020, Ruben Neves openly spoke about the benefits of signing for Manchester United.
Rúben Neves openly acknowledged the appeal of Manchester United long before his name was ever linked with a move to Old Trafford. Now, with United exploring a possible deal for the Al-Hilal midfielder as injuries affect both Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, his own words from 2020 appear increasingly prophetic.
Reports from United In Focus, later supported by The Times, suggest United view the 28-year-old as an experienced, high-quality addition to their midfield. With Neves entering the final months of his contract in Saudi Arabia, the timing of a potential transfer could suit all sides — particularly a player eager to re-establish himself on football’s biggest stage.
Neves once described United as “a great club in a great league”

Neves and Fernandes share a long history with the Portugal national team, and Neves was on the pitch when Fernandes made his Manchester United debut in a 0–0 draw against Wolves at Old Trafford in January 2020.
Fernandes impressed that day and received a warm reception from the home crowd. Speaking afterwards, Neves captured the moment with words that now resonate with his own situation.
“I’m really happy for him, he’s in a great club in a great league,” Neves said.
“Now he can show everyone what he can do. That is a lot, he’s a great player.”
Six years on, Neves himself may be staring at that same opportunity. A return to the Premier League would place him back in front of the global audience he once commanded, with the added incentive of building chemistry with Fernandes ahead of the next World Cup. Although a regular in Portugal’s squad, Neves played only 17 minutes in their recent 9–1 win over Armenia — a reminder that his place is far from guaranteed.
Unfinished business at the top level
Neves has little left to prove in terms of consistency. During his time in England, he completed five consecutive Premier League seasons with more than 30 league appearances each year. In Saudi Arabia, he has added a league title with Al-Hilal and helped eliminate Manchester City from the Club World Cup.
Yet, at 28, there remains a sense of unfinished business. A move to a Premier League contender would give Neves the chance to demonstrate that he is operating at a higher level than ever — and to do so under the same spotlight he once described as the ideal environment for a footballer’s career.
If Neves chooses that path, he will simply be following the logic he outlined himself all those years ago.
