Benjamin Sesko makes strong impression on Ruben Amorim after joining Man United

Ruben Amorim has been impressed with Benjamin Sesko since the Slovenian forward joined Manchester United two weeks ago.

Sesko was presented to fans at Old Trafford following his transfer from RB Leipzig and came off the bench during United’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The club’s new No. 30 is part of a completely rebuilt front line, including Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, as United have already invested more than £200 million on transfers this summer.

This overhaul comes as Amorim looks to move forward without Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Jadon Sancho – all three players are currently available for sale.

Last season, United managed only 44 goals in the league, highlighting their need for a sharper edge up front. The hope is that Sesko can improve on Rasmus Hojlund’s output from last year when the Dane found the net just 10 times across all competitions during his second campaign at Old Trafford.

After establishing himself as one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga, Sesko embarks on his first season in the Premier League.

Mbeumo and Cunha will join Sesko in the final third, occupying the No. 10 roles, which means they will share the workload alongside the young striker. They showed enough threat against Arsenal to give United fans a renewed sense of optimism.

“We have different options this year, but sometimes football is more than just on the pitch,” Amorim told Sky Sports.

“They [Mbeumo and Cunha] are coming in at a moment where the spirit is different, the place is different – sometimes we have a lot of very good players but the scars were there and that influenced the dynamic of the team.

“They can help us, not just on the pitch but off it too. I feel like they’re more free because they weren’t here for those really tough moments – so they’re seeing things from a fresh perspective.”

Amorim has also said that Sesko has exceeded his initial expectations since joining up with him at Carrington.

Amorim added: “When you are in a club like this, you want to have the best players but you also have to imagine the future.

“That’s really exciting – I love getting to know players, watching their videos and gathering information about them. But when you see them up close and they’re even better than you thought, it’s something else.”

“I need to be careful though. He’s going to be our striker for many years, so he needs time to settle down and enjoy his game. He’s got that obsession with improving which is great.”

What Ruben Amorim considers ‘success’ for Man Utd

It would be a big ask to expect United to go from 15th place last season to title contenders in just one year.

Amorim seems to understand that, but he also knows that at a club like Manchester United, success is ultimately measured by silverware.

The new campaign has only just begun, and there’s a long road ahead if United are going to climb back into the European spots.

Asked about what success would look like this season, Amorim said: “Success is to win titles, and we don’t know if we are going to achieve that (this season).

“We are not in the moment that we can say we are clearly fighting for the league – we just need to get the small steps and the small steps is to prepare every game like it’s a final.

“We want to be really competitive, trying to dominate games, trying to score goals and not get our fans bored to see our games… so if we have the small things and we put check, check, check – in the end it’s going be better.

“I think everyone knows that we have a goal – not for this season but in three years’ time – it’s our job [to win] the Premier League title.

“We are going do these steps [to reach] that goal but [at] this club you know every week narrative is different so you need prepared for [that], block noise [and] do job try win games.”
