Ruben Amorim has been given a clear prediction for Manchester United’s chances of returning to the Champions League in the 2025-26 season.

United had a chance to secure a spot through their Europa League campaign but fell short in the final against Tottenham, missing out on both silverware and a return to Europe’s top competition.

The two Premier League sides faced off in Bilbao, with Spurs coming away with a narrow 1-0 win that sealed their place back in the Champions League.

That defeat left United without any form of European football for the new season, putting added pressure on Amorim to deliver domestically.

Man Utd’s Champions League hopes for 2026-27 hinge on their Premier League performance

Manchester United’s only path back to the Champions League in 2026 will come through their league form, with no European competitions available as a fallback.

The Red Devils struggled throughout the 2024-25 campaign, finishing down in 15th under Ruben Amorim, who’ll be hoping for a much stronger showing this time around.

Opta Analyst ran a supercomputer simulation of the new season, putting every fixture through its model 10,000 times to get a broad picture of how things might play out.

The results didn’t paint an encouraging picture for United fans. The data suggested that United have only a slim chance of finishing inside the top four this season.

According to Opta Analyst’s projections, United have just a 6.7 per cent chance of securing a place in UEFA’s top club competition by the end of this campaign.

Why Opta’s supercomputer prediction for Manchester United’s Champions League hopes may need context

Opta’s predictions didn’t offer much encouragement, with the supercomputer having United down in 12th place by the end of the season. But there is an important detail behind those results.

According to Opta Analyst, part of the reason comes from the way the model was built. The supercomputer’s numbers are still heavily influenced by United’s poor showing last season.

The data being used also means Tottenham were given just a 5.7% chance of making it into Europe’s top competition next year.

United will open their new Premier League campaign at Old Trafford, hosting rivals Arsenal on the opening weekend of the season.
