Bruno Fernandes is approaching six years at Manchester United, but there’s a growing sense that the Portuguese midfielder might be reaching the end of his patience at Old Trafford.

Since joining United on 30 January 2020, Fernandes has been the team’s most influential player.

The move from Sporting CP was initially worth £47m, though add-ons eventually brought the total to around £67.6m.

Fernandes’ debut came in a goalless draw against Wolves and he has since gone on to play 310 times for United, scoring 103 goals and providing 95 assists.

There were rumours about a possible sale last summer, but he turned down interest from Saudi Arabia to stay put.

The speculation hasn’t completely died down, but Fernandes has continued to show commitment on the pitch even if results haven’t gone United’s way this season.

With Ruben Amorim dismissed and Michael Carrick stepping in to bring stability, there will naturally be questions about how these changes affect the squad.

Carrick’s immediate task will be to secure a place in the Champions League, but beyond that, there are several players with uncertain futures. Fernandes may not want to wait for those decisions to play out before making his own call.

Now 31, he’s still a key figure at Old Trafford, wearing the armband and leading by example. But this isn’t his first difficult season since making the switch from Sporting CP.

The report also notes that Fernandes had built a strong relationship with Amorim, and the idea of dealing with another interim manager before another change in summer might be weighing on him.

Bayern Munich have been mentioned as an interested club once again. And perhaps more concerning for United is that his contract includes a clause allowing foreign clubs to sign him for just £57 million.

It raises the real possibility that this could be Fernandes’ final season at Old Trafford. Whether he returns after this summer’s World Cup remains to be seen.

Michael Carrick’s high praise for Bruno Fernandes before becoming head coach

It’s always interesting to look back at what managers have said before taking over, and Carrick’s past comments on Fernandes have consistently been positive.

Carrick may have left Fernandes out of the starting lineup in his first match as interim boss back in 2021, covering for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but his respect for the Portuguese midfielder has always been clear.

Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast in July 2025, Carrick said: “Yeah, I like Bruno. I worked with him, with Ole and he’s fantastic.

“He’s got a real… he’s desperate to do well. He’s so keen to do well, and that’s a really positive thing. And then sometimes, you can overdo it sometimes as well, and it’s such a fine balance. But his attitude, he plays every game, he never misses training, and he’s there all the time.

“Puts himself out there, puts himself forward, and he’s been the main man really talisman for some time. And when there are moments or something is needed Bruno has been the one to step up.”
