Sekou Kone stood out during Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to ASEAN All-Stars, earning praise from Ruben Amorim for his brief appearance off the bench.
After the bitter disappointment of the Europa League final defeat, Manchester United’s 2025 post-season tour of Asia got off to a rough start with a 1-0 loss in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday night.
Ruben Amorim took a 32-man squad on the tour, using the first of two friendlies to get a look at several young players — including Kone, who caught the eye during a short cameo in the first half.

Amorim was also impressed with the 19-year-old’s display — and hinted he’ll be rewarded with more time in the next match.
Ruben Amorim praises Sekou Kone’s performance
Asked what he took away from the match, Amorim singled out the club’s young players — including Kone — for their attitude and willingness to take their chance.
Speaking specifically about Kone, Amorim confirmed that the 19-year-old will feature more in United’s next friendly in Hong Kong.
“He [Kone] will play more in the next match,” Amorim said in his post-match press conference on Tuesday. “He did well. All the youngsters tried, and that’s the most important thing.”
Manchester United struggled for ideas during the loss, continuing the frustrations of the 2024/25 season. But despite the result, there were some bright spots, particularly from youth.
Amorim also praised Ayden Heaven, but it was Kone who stole the limelight. Could this lead to a change of plan for the Malian this summer?
Sekou Kone could alter Ineos’ loan plans this summer
Though early plans reportedly involve sending Kone out on loan to Lausanne — Manchester United’s sister club — his performances during the tour could prompt a rethink.
A full season in Switzerland was originally expected, but Kone may now have a chance to fast-track his route into the first-team picture if he continues to impress.
United’s next match is against Hong Kong on Friday, where Amorim has of course promised Kone some minutes under his belt.
If the 19-year-old delivers again, it might be difficult for Ineos to justify sending him away before the new season begins.
