Alan Shearer told MatchDay Extra on Premier League Productions (16/05/22 at 10:50 pm) that the ‘rubbish’ handball rule needs to be changed after Ashley Barnes was punished against Tottenham.
Burnley were beaten 1-0 at Tottenham over the weekend, as Shearer didn’t like the manner in which the penalty was awarded to the home side.
It proved to be very costly against the relegation-threatened team because Harry Kane’s spot-kick was the difference on the day.
The Clarets are now in the relegation zone, whilst Spurs have all-but-secured fourth spot ahead of Arsenal, who were beaten by Newcastle United on Monday night.
Nonetheless, that moment at Tottenham was touched upon by Shearer last night and it’s fair to say he wasn’t a happy man.
“Under the law, it’s handball, but I do think the law is rubbish,” said Shearer. “I think it’s a terrible law.
“I think the authorities have gone so far and over-complicated the handball law that they have gone on and on and on. And made it almost impossible for players to defend, at times.
“Not even the players would want that as a handball. It has come off Ashley Barnes’ arm, yes. But it’s hit Sanchez’s shin, it’s going nowhere – that law has to be changed.”

RELEGATION BATTLE AND CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RACE TO GO TO THE FINAL DAY OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON
Tottenham fans will probably breathe a little easier on Sunday because they only need one point at Norwich City to secure Champions League football.
Burnley, on the other hand, need to get something at Aston Villa on Thursday night to ease their worries for the final day.
If they earn a point at Villa Park, then destiny will be in their own hands at the weekend.
What’s even better is that if they beat Steven Gerrard’s men, then, just like Spurs, only a point at home to Newcastle will be needed to maintain their Premier League status.
