The Crystal Palace winger replaces Raheem Sterling who withdrew from the England squad with injury.
England’s Ryan Bertrand and Andros Townsend during training
Andros Townsend has earned a recall to the England team after interim boss Gareth Southgate called up the Crystal Palace winger to replace the injured Raheem Sterling.
Townsend has helped The Eagles to eighth place so far this season, but he’s not been able to contribute much in the way of goals or assists with just one goal to his name at Selhurst Park.
The 25-year-old will hope to make an impact with World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia, as will Southgate who is in prime position to take over from Sam Allardyce on a permanent basis should he pass his audition.
Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend in action
Townsend missed out on a place at Euro 2016 in part due to a lack of playing time at Tottenham before his January move to Newcastle, but was called up over the likes of Ross Barkley, Jack Wilshere and even fellow team mate Wilfried Zaha who’s also had a strong start to the season.
Townsend’s inclusion was the talk of Twitter once news broke on Monday evening and while Palace fans were understandably thrilled, not everybody was celebrating the news.
