Manchester City defender John Stones is wary of Celtic threat

City travel to Parkhead to take on Brendan Rodgers’ side who began their Champions League campaign with a 7-0 thrashing by Barcelona.

Manchester City defender John Stones has urged caution to his star-studded City side when they play Celtic on Wednesday night in the Champions League, according to the Express.

Pep Guardiola’s side could make it 11 straight wins in all competitions as they look to continue a stunning start to the season that has many pundits predicting Premier League success come May.

But it is in the Champions League where they have struggled to make a big impression on the continent, although last season they achieved a very credible semi-final finish after losing to eventual champions Real Madrid.

Meanwhile Celtic also lead the way in the Scottish Premiership but suffered a hugely crushing defeat at Camp Nou in their opening group match with Lionel Messi and co running riot.

Traditionally however the Bhoys are capable of pulling off upsets at Celtic Park with Barcelona and Manchester United tasting defeat in recent years and Stones warns the same could happen to City and threaten their 100% start to the campaign.

“If you look Celtic have taken some big scalps in this competition,” the former Everton centre back said. “They have beaten Barcelona and Manchester United up there so you have got to take them seriously.

“We will be the favourites for most people but it does not count for anything once the game starts. They have got quality in their side, otherwise they would not be in the Champions League.

“I have come up against Brendan and he has a lot of experience in the game and I faced him a few times when he was at Liverpool and we have a lot of respect for him. It is an exciting game for me personally. We will work hard and get ready for it.”

City’s firepower should be much too strong for Celtic to handle, but do not underestimate the intimidating atmosphere of Celtic Park which has burned teams in the past as already pointed out.

The big question is whether Guardiola can lead City to a maiden Champions League title, and on the basis of their start to the season they definitely have what it takes to put up a fight and be one of the top sides to beat in the competition.
