A late James Milner penalty puts Swansea City in further trouble with Francesco Guidolin’s job far from safe.
Swansea midfielder Leon Britton has told the club’s website he believes his side deserved more from their defeat to Liverpool after leading the Reds 1-0 at the break.
The Swans bossed Liverpool for the majority of the first half and should have added to their early goal from Leroy Fer, with debutant Borja Baston guilty of missing a few chances to extend the lead.
But second half goals from Roberto Firmino and a James Milner penalty turned the match on its head in South Wales, and an unmarked Mike van der Horn should have equalised with the last kick of the game but failed to properly connect with Angel Rangel’s cross.
Long-serving midfielder Britton says the manner of the defeat was hard to take and suggests Swansea were tired from their tactic to out press Liverpool in the first half.
“It’s disappointing,” he said to the website. “In the first half I thought we played very well. We pressed them, we caused them problems and deservedly took the lead.
“We might have been more than 1-0 up at half-time, so to come off at the end of game with no points was frustrating even though the performance was very good.
“Maybe the first half took its toll on us. We pressed very hard and it was a very intense game for us. In the second half they stepped up a gear. At one stage it looked as though we had ridden the storm, but the penalty at the end killed us.”
Defeat makes it four losses in a row and with no win since August, manager Francesco Guidolin’s position has come under increased scrutiny.
No home win so far this season and one point taken from a possible 18 since their opening day victory over Burnley has placed enormous pressure on the Italian to turn their form around fast with the club precariously outside the relegation zone, but Britton says the players are fully behind the former Udinese coach and back him to stop the rot at the Liberty Stadium.
“We are right behind him, but we cannot stop the speculation,” he said.
