Royston Drenthe gives his reasons for choosing to move to Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Reading until January.
Royston Drenthe’s career has not gone according to plan. Once at 10-time European champions Real Madrid, the Dutchman is now plying his trade in the Championship.
And even in the second tier of English football the 27-year-old cannot get games. Versatile enough to play as a left-back and a left-winger, Drenthe moved to Reading in the summer of 2013, but a season later he has been sent out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday.
The former Feyenoord star joined the Owls on loan until January 2 on transfer deadline day and has now explained why he took up the opportunity to play for them.
‘As soon as I was told of the interest from Sheffield Wednesday, my reaction was ‘get me there’ because this is such a great club and one that I think is going places’, he told Wednesday’s official website.
‘The chairman was really good to me and as soon as I spoke to the gaffer, I knew Sheffield Wednesday was the place I wanted to be’.
Drenthe may not be guaranteed a regular place in the starting line-up, but he will provide Wednesday manager Stuart Gray with squad depth.
Having experienced English football with Everton and Reading, the one-time capped Netherlands international will know what it takes to succeed in the Championship.
Wednesday have made a decent start to their 2014-15 Championship campaign and are currently 10th in the league table with eight points from five matches, just a point off the final playoff spot.
