Nottingham Forest are expected to appoint Roy Keane as Martin O’Neill’s assistant.

Ireland's assistant coach Roy Keane holds a press conference at the Montbauron stadium in Versailles on June 24, 2016 during the Euro 2016 football tournament.

Incoming Nottingham Forest assistant manager Roy Keane is a big fan of Daryl Murphy.

Keane is expected to join Martin O’Neill at Forest in the near future, as reported by the Nottingham Post.

And Murphy may well be one of the players at the City Ground who is delighted by the appointment of O’Neill and Keane.

The Forest striker has only featured as a back-up player for much of this campaign, but he is well known to the Reds’ new management duo.

O’Neill and Keane both worked with Murphy at international level, when they were in charge of the Republic of Ireland.

And Keane was a big fan of the Forest man. He said to the 42.ie: “Murph will never let us down and you can analyse it till the cows come home. If Murph starts on Friday night he will give everything for the cause.

“We could be here all day analysing players’ abilities and strengths and weaknesses but in terms of attitude, Murph always contributes.

“It might be stuff that the untrained eye might not notice but in terms of set pieces, Murph does a job for us, stretching teams.”

Whether Murphy will get more game time at Forest with O’Neill in charge remains to be seen.

Lewis Grabban has dominated Forest’s scoring charts this season, but O’Neill may be more willing to try out a system with two strikers than Aitor Karanka was.
