Roy Keane stated that Caoimhin Kelleher got ‘very lucky’ after he escaped a red card during Liverpool’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Cardiff City on Sunday, as he told ITV Sport.

The TV pundit stated that Cardiff’s Mark Harris, who was on the end of the challenge, was fortunate not to suffer a ‘bad injury’ from the Liverpool goalkeeper’s tackle.

Early in the second half, Kelleher decided to race off his line to clear the ball, and rather than get contact on the ball, he caught Harris on the ankle.

The 23-year-old was issued a yellow card for his challenge, and even though VAR looked at the incident, no red card was issued.

Keane felt that Liverpool’s man in between the sticks wasn’t in control of his actions and, as the former midfielder kept repeating, he was ‘lucky’.

“He’s not in control, is he?” said Keane. “He’s not in control. He got very, very lucky with the sending off.

“It could have been a bad injury, so he got very, very lucky. He has got the benefit of the doubt.

“It is one of those ones, the home team gets it. He’s very lucky.”

The challenge from Kelleher was something out of the Keane tackling manual and it’s a challenge he would have made during his playing days.

Whilst the Reds were comfortable in knocking out the Championship side in the FA Cup, they were slightly fortunate in some of the VAR calls that were made on the day.

Either way, it was another dominant display from the Reds and their name into the next round.

After reaching the League Cup final, Liverpool will want another Wembley trip in the FA Cup.

Fellow Premier League side, and relegation-threatened, Norwich City stand in their way in the fifth round.
