Republic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane has backed Everton’s Seamus Coleman for a move to Manchester United, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
Keane was always been forthright with his views, and he angered Everton fans back in November by slamming the Toffees and manager Ronald Koeman.
Speaking to the Irish Independent, Keane suggested he didn’t care about Everton boss Koeman, and claimed that Everton’s long wait for a trophy may be down to their players not being tough enough.
Keane, who has worked with Everton’s James McCarthy and Seamus Coleman on the international stage in his role as Ireland’s assistant manager, unsurprisingly infuriated some Everton fans with those comments earlier this season – and he’s risked their wrath again.
Former Manchester United hero Keane has been quoted by the Daily Mail as saying that he would love to see Everton star Coleman join the Red Devils, claiming the move would be ideal for him.
Keane added that whilst Coleman is at a good club in Everton, he wants to see the right back play in the Champions League – and signing for United would give him a better chance of that at this stage of his career.
Everton’s Seamus Coleman celebrates
“I’d love to see Seamus at Man United,” said Keane. “It would suit him down to the ground. Obviously, he’s at a very good club in Everton. He isn’t getting any younger. From a selfish point of view, from an Irish point of view, you want players like Seamus playing in the Champions League and getting a taste of football at that level. Saying that, joining United might not mean Champions League at this moment in time,” he added.
Coleman, 28, has long been one of Everton’s most dependable players, and he’s chipping in with an impressive four goals and three assists in the Premier League this season.
Whether United need him is another matter though; Jose Mourinho has a right back he trusts in Antonio Valencia, and it’s hard to see United splash the cash on Coleman unless Valencia leaves – no matter how much Keane wants the move to happen.
