Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side were dumped out of the Europa League last night.
Roy Keane delivered a scathing attack on the Celtic players, following their 3-0 defeat to Zenit St Petersburg in the Europa League last night, suggesting that they let the fans down, as quoted by the Scottish Herald.
Brendan Rodgers side have been dominant once again domestically this season, and currently sit comfortably at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, nine points clear of bitter rivals Rangers, although the same old problems continue to plague them on the continent.
The Hoops seem to find the step up from league football to European action incredibly hard to cope with, and it will be something that Rodgers must be looking to address during the summer.
Keane, who made 13 appearances for Celtic during a six-month spell at Parkhead, didn’t hold back in his criticism of the Hoops players, labelling them as a bunch of ‘bluffers’, as quoted by the Scottish Herald:
“You are hoping Celtic can grind out a result to make the supporters proud, but they didn’t do that. They needed to show courage. With 20 minutes to go and 3-0 down everyone wanted the ball … bluffers. They never turned up really. We are always desperate for Celtic to stay in the competition because of their supporters. When you play this game you need to be brave. They played well last week but it’s one thing playing well at home.”
Celtic will have a chance to redeem themselves immediately, when they head to Pittodrie to take on Aberdeen on Sunday, and nothing less than a win will do, with Rangers breathing down their necks.
