Liverpool progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Manchester United legend Roy Keane has told ITV Sport that Liverpool have a good chance of winning the Champions League but will want to avoid Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid.
The Reds booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday night as they earned a 2-1 win over Manchester City. Goals from Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino cancelled out Gabriel Jesus’ opener.
It gave Liverpool a handsome scoreline of 5-1, after their 3-0 win in the first leg and now they remain in the last four of the elite competition. They have been joined by AS Roma, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
Keane believes Liverpool can win the Champions League, but reckons Jurgen Klopp will want to avoid Real Madrid. He also heaped praise on January signing Virgil van Dijk, as he continues to impress at the back for Liverpool.
Asked whether van Dijk had helped calm the Liverpool defence down, Keane said: “Yeah and I think that is what all good players do. He’s come in and been a big presence himself, but he’s helped the other players around him.
“At the start of the campaign, we thought they had an easy group. Then we questioned how good Porto are, but now they have beaten Manchester City, teams will have to take them seriously because of the goals they’re getting.
“If you’re in the Liverpool camp, you’ll still want to avoid Real Madrid.”
Van Dijk, 26, has had a huge impact on the Reds defence, with only five goals conceded in his last 10 appearances for the Reds – keeping six clean sheets in the mean time.
Liverpool will find out their Champions League opponents on Friday afternoon, with the draw being held in Switzerland at 1pm. But focus switches to Saturday as they play host to Bournemouth in an evening kick-off.
