Gary Lineker has made a joke on Twitter about Newcastle United not winning trophies.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and England international striker has joked that Newcastle will not win a major trophy for four billion years.

The Magpies last won the old First Division title in 1927, the FA Cup in 1955, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2006.

Pining for a trophy

Newcastle are a big and established club in the Premier League, and one suspects that fans are desperate for the team to win a major trophy.

It is very unlikely that the Magpies will win the Premier League anytime soon.

Newcastle should aim for the cup competitions, but they do not seem to have much luck in them either.

Steve Bruce’s side lost to Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup last weekend, while last month, they went down 1-0 to Championship club Brentford in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

Perhaps next season Newcastle will do better in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. As for now, the Magpies should aim to finish in the top four of the Premier League table.
